Hi, I'm Katie, from Iowa . . .Katie Ryken is a third-year medical student at the Carver
College of Medicine of the University of Iowa. She graduated with honors from
the University of Iowa with a B.S. in Microbiology and a minor in International
Studies. She has conducted medical research in Infectious Disease and Surgery
for over six years, maintaining academic interests in under-served populations
and traveling nationally to present her work. Katie served as the founder and
president of her medical school’s chapter of Student Physicians for Human
Rights, as well as holding active roles in student leadership. In Iowa City,
she works as a volunteer advocate for the Rape Victim Advocacy Program and
underwent a 120-hour training program to better serve victims of sexual
assault.
Last summer, Ms. Ryken spent 12 weeks at the University of Sarajevo Clinical Center in the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, where she became interested in the chronic health effects of warfare. She was awarded grants from the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights and the Carver College of Medicine Global Programs to pursue her studies. She was invited back to the 2nd Annual International Conference on Trauma and Injury Prevention, a multi-sponsored event hosted in Zenica, to present a workshop on physician intervention in domestic and sexual violence. Ms. Ryken will be working with the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology once again to conduct research on the long-term health status of those injured by landmines and munitions, through surveys and data collection. She will be partnering with the Bosnia-Herzegovina Medical Student Association to provide medical English workshops to Bosnian medical students. Ms. Ryken will also be involved in the community outside Sarajevo by working with organizations such as the Bosnia-Herzegovina Mine Action Centre to assess the lasting effects of landmines in other areas of the country. *Please note - This is not an official Department of State website.
